Theories and Theorists

topic posted Mon, May 2, 2005 - 9:51 AM by  offlineAdrian
I'm back in the game, finally, of theorizing around social software. Who here would be up for some nitty gritty discussions?

Topical suggestions:

Goffman and interactionism
Giddens and risk
Network Relations theories (social networking)
Technologies (rss, sites, tools, etc)

Anybody have the time?

May I choose the 'Technologies' topic and write about my bookmark site? I took del.icio.us and wrapped it around the idea that when you have a really big list of bookmarks than what you need is more search than cataloging. You can view a first prototype at: zby.aster.net.pl/search/

anyone NOT working on personal search, please raise your hand...

i'm working on a similar project for my Internet Systems Research class at USF, check out the paper describing the system: cs.usfca.edu/wiki/index.php/PwnThePaper

      prototype soon to follow!

The paper sounds impressive. Do you plan to open your source? Any chance for collaboration?

          thanks.

i dont think we'll have much of an issue with open-sourcing the project. at least once we submitted it, i guess the our professor would like it better if we're the only ones who actually worked on it ;)

i'm trying to get my partner on the project to join the tribe. i've no problem in cooperating on this project. especially after seeing your existing stuff :)

            Hi,

I don't know what is the nature of your assigment, if it is more theoretical than the work can be partaged quite cleanly - you could do the theoretical part, I could give you the platform for testing your hypotheses. Otherwise it can be more difficult - but you could ask your professor to give you guidelines.

My goal is to build a usefull and popular public web site. I don't know how I will get funding for that project, but I am quite commited.

we're trying to do both the theoretical and a practical implementation. i do have a protoype that partially working and i'll be getting it to do a lot of the basic stuff (bookmark storage and retrieval, search of personal web neighborhood, etc.) by the end of next week.

we should talk some more once the semester is over (in about 2 weeks), i'll have much more free time and i'll be able to put a more concrete definition on what we wanna do. right now the general plan is to work on the project over the summer, make it a usable site and then make it into a good tool for group collaboration.

              PS.
i'm in the midst of moving so internet connectivity is sparse for the new week or so.

I am thinking about the possible ways of collaboration. On my part I am pretty sure I have little chance to finish all the features I plan for my site on my own, especially since before I get some kind of external funding for it I can only work on it after finishing my day job duties. For a small player like me some collaboration with others seems like the only way to build something usefull.
