Rhythm and Blues

It's been so long since I've posted to this, my own tribe, that the only thing i could possibly throw out there is this: what's the life-sustaining rhythm and pace for an online discussion/tribe?

Once dead, they can be resuscitated, but that tends to be a task left to a new crop of members. At what point to sys admin people start to sweat that their community's getting too thin? How often have you opted not to post to a tribe because it's been so dead that you figure there's no point in leaving even a crumb for fear of attracting the wrong attention? (e.g. newbies, not to sound as that makes me sound...)

cheers,

    mostly chance, luck.

if it's chance or luck that figures in a discussion's activity then online discussions have little in common with real world ones... which doesnt seem likely... no? chance or luck may inform some things, but when it comes to people interacting? and if the technology eliminates so much of that, that it's only by chance that people come across tribes, then the technology would suck...

sometimes i'm amazed at the connection btwn through the wire communication and meetings in some rooms communication.

but i didnt mean "chance" that you and i happen to be linked in the way we are now - yes, that is not really different from real world community.

but chance..like the tons of other factors that cause one to want to participate NOW, multiplied by such factors among other would-be participants. as an example, shortly before I got to this tribe, I was shedding my overboard curiosity with how all this technology works. so my overarching expectancy to be involved was quite external to the group, as luck would have it.

we are all less in control on the wire than on the richness of all senses. maybe we're fooled to think otherwise what with the ability to "stop time," in a sense...

lost in thought but something like that.

and hey, I don't mean to dis your question. yes, i bet we could identify some factors that might figure into a group's rhythm. but the luck part looks hooooj to me.

damn, i'm becoming a dissenter. kill me now!!

i'm looking around the web and i'm thinking my original answer was so wimpy (chance, luck) because the question was vague. could hammer out some better ideas with some firmer guidelines. would first classify the group whose rhythm youre wondering about.

i'm working on some of this... which is why i'm always interesteed in people's experiences.

would you say that your personal experience is that this social software stuff introduces a lot of arbitrariness into social interactions?

yeah, that's a more succinct way to put what i wanted to say.

i just moved back to CA from MN. i was thinking about how there are more cars here but people are better/faster drivers so the traffic flows much better than in the twin cities. if you arbitrarily mixed people from the two states - kinda like internet space - you'd probably get worse flow than either on its own.

I think this depends very much on the technology. For example when I have a way to aggregate many forums into one news feed the frequency on each individual forum does not matter much and the only criterium is high signal, but when I need to manually check some forum the effort needs to be justified with the probability of available new material and then the frequency matters very much.

that's interesting. so you reduce the discussion if you will into a stream, a publication. yes, get it. now that's a perfect example of the manner in which technology transforms the format of interaction -- in this case taking something that's conversation and transforming it into a broadcast of sorts.

It's been a while since I have read adminstrative theory but somewhere along the way I recall a theory that explains the phenomena of organizational lifecycles. It is built on the premise that there are different needs at different points and time and as such different personalities emerge, retreat, take charge at different points for the effectivenss and sustaince of the organization...lulls are allows as blips of transition.TTFN KT
